RAY COOPER - Saturday 8th November at 8.00 p.m.
Ray is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who accompanies his songs with cello, mandolin, guitar and piano. Each song comes with a story-and Ray has a lot of great stories.
Ray started to play in bands when he was just 16 and worked with a lot of different groups across many musical genres. This led to him becoming an in demand session musician for well known producers including Steve Lillywhite and Martin Rushent.
He worked as a singer, bass guitar player and cellist before hooking up with Oysterband and beginning a long exploration into his own roots.
Oysterband toured in 27 countries and Ray recorded 19 albums with them. In 2012 they won 3 awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for best group, best album and best traditional track, appeared on “Later with Jools Holland” and were dubbed by fROOTS magazine as one of the 3 ‘Icons of Folk’.
Despite their success, Ray took the decision to leave the band in 2013. He has since carved out a very successful solo career, recording five critically acclaimed albums and touring extensively in Britain, Northern Europe and Canada.
Ray’s latest album ‘Even For A Shadow’ was released in May 2024 and he says about the record: ‘This album is like a car journey and the kind of radio I would like to hear, but rarely find’
